Foreign drivers let off £15m in fines

Drivers on British roads whose vehicles are registered abroad are evading fines totalling nearly £15m a year because authorities here are failing to enforce them. Figures disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act also reveal that many police forces routinely discard speeding tickets and local councils simply do not bother to issue parking tickets to vehicles with foreign numberplates because tracing the owner is too time-consuming.

Driver crashes car through seventh floor wall

It's a parking manoeuvre 67-year old Ralph Hudson will never forget, when he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal and nearly plunged seven stories to the ground through a car park's brick wall.

Luckily for Mr Hudson his Mercedes C-Class was left dangling half out of the wall and he was able to get out of the car. The cars below were not so fortunate and seven were badly damaged by the falling bricks.

Supervising C1 and D1 learner drivers

When we announced the results of the Consultation: Improved Services for Customers and General Fee Increases for 2008 on 19 February 2008 we explained that we intended to provide clarification within the regulations as to who may act as an accompanying driver for learners driving category C1 (medium size lorry) and D1 (minibus) vehicles.

Chief driving examiner welcomes the publication of scientific study

Chief driving examiner and director for safer driving Trevor Wedge has welcomed the publication of a new scientific study into how driving instructors can develop their coaching skills.

The EU-funded ‘High Impact approach for Enhancing Road safety through More Effective communication Skills for driving instructors’ (HERMES) project began in March 2007 and was completed in February 2010.
