Windscreen of the future revealed

Posted by Will Dracott on Tuesday, May 31, 2011,

A car's windscreen could display every piece of information a driver needs - and more - by 2020.

That's the vision of car glass repair experts, Autoglass. The company has released a video demonstrating its ideas for the windscreen of the future.

The two-minute video depicts the view out from the driver's perspective, while travelling through a part of London. At first glance, the windscreen takes the form of a well integrated head up display, showing speed readout, gear selected and a f...

FBI agent crashes 200mph Ferrari

Posted by Will Dracott on Tuesday, May 31, 2011,

According to a report in the 'Daily Mail', a Ferrari F50, worth about £450,000, has been crashed and badly damaged while in the hands of an FBI agent.

The rare Ferrari was stolen from a showroom in Pennsylvania in 2003, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation successfully tracked it down five years later.

The - no doubt delighted - owner unfortunately didn't get his car back, as the case was still under investigation, but before that could come to a conclusion an agent crashed the F50...

Space call for Ferrari's chairman

Posted by Will Dracott on Monday, May 30, 2011,

Ferrari's Chairman Luca di Montezemolo is used to getting calls from important people, but a recent video call from Paolo Nespoli trumps everything else.

Nespoli's video call came from space, specifically the International Space Station - orbiting around Earth at speeds that even the fastest Ferrari couldn't hope to reach.

The Italian astronaut spoke to Ferrari's Chairman for nearly five minutes, at one point showing Montezemolo a Ferrari badge stuck on an ESA control unit.

The world's most expensive number plates

Posted by Will Dracott on Sunday, May 29, 2011,

There used to be a time when a private plate really meant you were doing ok for yourself. Now, though, they're so cheap that they're rarely a status symbol.

Apart from these beauties that is. We'll start with the UK's five top plates, then move onto the world's list - all of which dwarf our humble registration record breakers, and, interestingly, were all bought in the same country: Abu Dhabi.

In the UK

'Daily' Lamborghini to come

Posted by Will Dracott on Sunday, May 29, 2011,

Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann has confirmed that an 'everyday' car is on the way from the Italian supercar maker.

But for those expecting an 'affordable' supermini in the Aston Martin Cygnet mould - put your chequebook down. The new model is likely to be a four-door saloon based on the Estoque concept, a rival to the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide.

The Estoque caused a sensation when it was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, with looks very similar to the Lamborghi...

Trucker attacked for diesel

Posted by Will Dracott on Saturday, May 28, 2011,

Truck drivers are being advised to be extra vigilant at motorway service stations after a potentially violent diesel theft.

The unnamed driver had stopped at Donnington Services on the M1 when he was approached by a gang of men earlier this month (May 2011).

They threatened him with violence and proceeded to siphon 40 litres of diesel - around £56 value at the pumps - from his tank.

Fortunately the man was left unharmed, but the Road Haulage Association (RHA) has warned that this sort ...

Britain's most dangerous roads named

Posted by Will Dracott on Thursday, May 26, 2011,

The A537 running from Macclesfield to Buxton in the Peak District has been named Britain's most dangerous stretch of road.

An extensive report by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) has named Britain's ten most dangerous - or 'persistently higher risk' - roads. It looked at the number of crashes between 2004 and 2006, then 2007 to 2009 and compared the statistics.

Every stretch in the top ten is a single carriageway, and it is drivers in the north-west of England that have to deal with th...

Citroen C3 recall - the car with two brake pedals

Posted by Will Dracott on Wednesday, May 25, 2011,

French car maker Citroen has recalled more than 20,000 examples of the C3 Picasso because of a fault with the brakes.

It has been discovered that the car's brakes can curiously be applied from the passenger foot well.

This is due to a fault with the manufacturing process, during the car's conversion from left- to right-hand-drive.

Part of the braking mechanism runs below the passenger foot well and is covered by a thin piece of felt, which can be pressed easily by anyone sitting in the f...

Ultimate McLaren plate for sale

Posted by Will Dracott on Monday, May 23, 2011,

The DVLA has announced it will sell the MCL 12C plate, and is expecting it to fetch staggering money from a very specific owner.

That's because it's the closest that any McLaren MP4-12C owner is going to get to having their car name on their plate.

Despite that, the DVLA has only set a £900 reserve on the plate, although that's more likely a sign of its confidence than a desire to give a supercar owner a bargain.

The McLaren MP4-12C is the supercar of the moment. It is the first road ...

The principle behind sound emulation in electric cars is safety. Because we're...

It flatters cars that can run on electric power for short periods and those with en...

Consumer advice website Which? Car has slammed the Government's car safety body, the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) for its "toothless" approach.

That conclusion is reached because in 2010 VOSA issued no car recalls in the UK at all, while its American equivalent, the National Highway Traffic System Administration (NHTSA), issued 118.

The Which? Car investigation found that the NHTSA had recalled models that are on sale in both the US and UK, while VOSA had not.

100mpg VW Golf on the horizon

Posted by Will Dracott on Tuesday, May 3, 2011,

Volkswagen has hinted that it will build a Golf capable of 100mpg.

Due to go on sale in 2020, the cleanest Golf ever will have a CO2 emissions rating of only 75g/km.

Top brass at Volkswagen told 'Autocar' about its plans for the model, which is thought to be called the Golf blue-e-motion.

It's expected to be powered by a two-cylinder engine along with an electric motor, rendering it a hybrid.

An Introduction to Natural Gas as a Fuel

Posted by Will Dracott on Monday, May 2, 2011,
Although Europe is unlikely to ever rely solely on natural gas for fuelling vehicles, the use of this abundant resource could in part alleviate the demand on fossil fuels. In other parts of the world, notably Asia, natural gas based fuels are dominant, with the government mandating its use in certain transport sectors.

You may be familiar with LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or Autogas. It has been around for a while. Many older, large capacity cars have been converted to run on LPG in ...

It's difficult to predict where the automotive world will draw its fuel from in the long term. The internal combustion engine is far from dead and further efficiencies and integration of hybrid technology will lengthen their life span for some time to come. The use of fuels produced from a renewable resource also makes sense to a certain extent, though there are several hurdles to overcome for bio-fuels to be practical for widespread use.

Various concept cars shown at the internationa...

You're looking at Jaguar's biggest selling model. Well, it will be when it reaches the showroom in September. The XF is rightfully acclaimed, but its lack of a four-cylinder turbodiesel has always held it back in the sales stakes - its Germanic rival's entry-level diesels typically take around three quarters of overall sales. So Jaguar has popped a 2.2-litre turbodiesel under the XF's re-profiled bonnet and mated it to an eight-speed automatic transmission....
