THOUSANDS
of convicted drink-drivers have been wrongly handed back their licences
due to errors by the courts and the police, it has emerged.
The Daily Telegraph reported that in two cases, drivers who should
have been required to undergo medicals before being allowed back on the
road went on to cause fatal accidents.

Blue badge parking changes announced

MEASURES
to crack down on drivers who abuse the disabled parking system will
come into force from January 1, the Government has announced.
They will include a new Blue Badge design which is harder to forge, said transport minister Norman Baker.
Blue Badge fraud is estimated to cost the UK £46 million a year and reform of the system was seen as urgently needed.

Lasers to cut M-way crash closures

NEW TECHNOLOGY to help reduce the time motorways are closed after crashes has been announced by the Government.
In a £2.7 million deal, 27 police forces across England are to get 3D laser scanning technology.
The technology saves time by quickly making a 3D image of the whole
crash site, rather than investigators painstakingly surveying multiple

LEARNING to drive is not just for 19-year-olds but nonagenarians too, it has been revealed.
Official figures show that there are as many as 48 drivers in their 90s who have provisional licences, with the oldest being 98.

Man pays parking ticket 58 years late

A TEXAS man will clear his conscience today and pay a one-dollar parking ticket he received 58 years ago.
Dale Crawford, of Houston,
sent a letter to city chiefs after finding the ticket among some
keepsakes. He said it was a debt that he wanted to pay, even though it
was a "small, almost unnoticeable amount".
Mr Crawford received the ticket on February 3 1953, the day he was inducted into the US Army.

TWO MEN who earned hundreds of thousands of pounds from illegal car clamping have been jailed, police said.
Carlton Williams, 47 and Lee Stagg, 43, made an estimated £350,000
from their scam, which operated across the south west of England, south

Revealed: best and worst cars for potholes

cars are the most resilient to damage caused by potholes, according to
new research released today, and could save owners hundreds of pounds a
year.
The data, compiled by the Warranty Direct-owned website

motorways, it emerged last night.
Ministers are considering extending the proposed higher limit to a far wider
range or roads than had previously been thought.

Paper driving licence to be phased out

The paper driving licence is to be phased out as part of the Government’s
drive to cut red tape.
It will disappear in 2015, after which only a photocard will be issued.
Details of driving convictions will be held on computer and made available
to car hire companies and foreign authorities.
Until the paper licence disappears, drivers will be legally obliged to retain
the document and present to police officers if stopped.

warden claimed he had visited two towns 28 miles apart in 35 seconds.

Learner drivers to be allowed on motorways

attempt to cut the death toll among novice motorists.

with the year before, according to trade figures, which underline how

Autumn Statement 2011: Duty respite for motorists

Motorists have been given some respite after January’s planned rise in fuel
duty was cancelled by George Osborne.
The Chancellor said the three pence rise will now wait until August, when it
will replace an inflation-linked rise worth an estimated five pence a litre.
In January motorists driving a car with a 50-litre tank, such as a Vauxhall
Astra, will now be spared a tax rise of £1.50 each time they fill up.

Drivers’ lives are being put at risk by metal thieves attacking the road
network, plunging motorists into darkness, it was claimed.
What had once been thought of a problem confined to the rail network is now
spreading to the entire transport infrastructure, MPs were told at

Vauxhall Corsa becomes danger to shipping after floating to sea

A Vauxhall Corsa has become a danger to shipping after being washed off a
slipway and floating out to sea.
The two people who were in the hire car at the time managed to escape before
the car slipped under the waves.
However, it is thought that, rather than sinking to the sea bed, the car might
be drifting below the surface, held up by pockets of air still left inside.

School bus cuts set to hit faith schools

Faith schools are set to be hit as nearly three out of four education
authorities are ready to cut transport funding for pupils, a study has
found.
School buses are being earmarked for savings by councils who are struggling to
make ends meet because of Whitehall spending cuts.
This has led to fears that the cuts will put children at risk especially

Four-year-old girl killed in M6 pile-up

A child has been killed in a motorway crash involving several cars and a
lorry, an ambulance service said.
The collision happened at around 12.30am today on the M6 southbound, between
junctions 4a and 4.
